With a steampunk theme this story is filled with gliders, flying machines, strange places and a mist that causes many to avoid it。 I was very curious about the mist and what kind of power it had。 I was hooked by the time Cass had escaped and was wandering the streets alone。 She is a very good character with strength that drives her to survive。I loved her spunk and determination to find safety。 The world she lives in is dangerous and barely survives on the meager food she steals。I couldn’t wait t With a steampunk theme this story is filled with gliders, flying machines, strange places and a mist that causes many to avoid it。 I was very curious about the mist and what kind of power it had。 I was hooked by the time Cass had escaped and was wandering the streets alone。 She is a very good character with strength that drives her to survive。I loved her spunk and determination to find safety。 The world she lives in is dangerous and barely survives on the meager food she steals。I couldn’t wait to see what adventure was in store for her。 It is easy to imagine the world Cass is in with exceptional details the author gives us。 I could see the mist as it captured everything in its path。 The flying machines were big and powerful as they took people to their towers that were safe from the darkness of the mist。 We get a brief glimpse of Theo at the beginning of the book when he has a chance encounter with Cass。 Somehow I knew he would become an important part of the story and I was excited to see how the author would fit him into the world that Cass knows。 I don’t know about you, but I do not like to fly at all。 I’ve been on a plane a few times and never once was I comfortable。 I guess if I looked out the window I could see something to distract me, but all I felt was fear。 As I read this story I almost wanted to strap on a glider and feel the wind against my face and travel with Cass。 Being a diver is dangerous but I thought it was so intriguing to go through the mist and explore the land below。 The story involves missions to recover items for people and as a diver Cass must go into unknown places where creatures lurk。 Teaming up with Cass, Theo thinks he can find the cure for the mist。 Their journey is extremely dangerous and I was on the edge of my seat as they ascended down to the place where Theo hoped a long kept family secret could be found。 There is a definite divide between the rich and poor in the story as power seems to fuel those who are in control。 Theo and Cass will come face to face with something evil that challenges them in a fight to survive。 The ending is spectacular and holds nothing back as this force is determined to stop Theo and Cass。 By this time I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough。 Would Cass and Theo survive ? Could they find the answer to make the mist disappear forever? I wish I could answer those questions, but the author cleverly left readers with a cliffhanger。 Now we must wait for the next book to see what happens。 I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit。The review is my own opinion。 。。。more

Is it with Elaeros? Yep。。。。。。 I was totally surprised at that。 When was the last time I read about a character dying? And while I was heartbroken over this character, it just made the storyline that much better。 Honestly, if this character had stuck around, we wouldn't have the same outcome。 BRAVO Ms。 Busse! I imagine that was difficult to write, just as it was to read。There is plenty of action in this story as well, which keep those pages turning。 And all throughout, I could see faith themes subtly woven in。 It may be because I always have that mindset when reading a book, and I purposefully look for it。 Some people may overlook it。 But I saw it。 It was magical。 Beautiful。 And I cannot wait to see how it's woven into book two。Cass and Theo are characters to root for。 You can't help but love them, and see them make their way through the circumstances that Busse throws at them。 And again。。。。。that ending was just jaw dropping。 Like can we have the next book now please? Just kidding, I know it'll be worth the wait。 This is a must read of 2021! I promise you that you will not be disappointed。 I received a complimentary copy of this book。 I was not required to write a favorable review。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 。。。more

This book!! I’ve never read any steampunk before and wasn’t entirely sure what I would think。 But I trusted The author (I love her Ravenwood Saga) and boy I was not let down! This book is amazing! Such a different world than I’ve ever read before and I loved it。 I could completely envision everything and it is magnificent。 I love the cast of characters and my heart is a little broken over a couple things! 🥺 I cannot wait for book 2!!

I'm pretty sure this is a 4, not a 4。5。。。 but I'm not totally sure。 This book was preordered for two reasons。 Steampunk and one of the prettiest covers I have ever seen。 I don't know who designed this cover, but I am so excited to see what the second cover looks like。 This is stunning。 This is art。 If I were the author, I would have this as a poster hanging up in my house。 it deserves to be in a book cover museum。 The story itself took a little while for me to fully appreciate。 I had to get to k I'm pretty sure this is a 4, not a 4。5。。。 but I'm not totally sure。 This book was preordered for two reasons。 Steampunk and one of the prettiest covers I have ever seen。 I don't know who designed this cover, but I am so excited to see what the second cover looks like。 This is stunning。 This is art。 If I were the author, I would have this as a poster hanging up in my house。 it deserves to be in a book cover museum。 The story itself took a little while for me to fully appreciate。 I had to get to know the characters before I actually felt myself getting invested。 Theo took ,longer to warm up to than Cass。 He just wasn't as interesting at first, but his story was important so I'm glad we had his POV。Of course the ending was wicked。 Busse knew she needed sales on book two, so she made sure we would all buy it。 This book is short and I feel like it maybe could've been turned into a thick standalone。。。 but I also LOVE short books and duologies so I'm not going to complain。I think this is one worth giving a shot。 。。。more

Secrets in the Mist has such a cool plot。 A man-made mist that was meant to peacefully end a war but instead ended up turning very deadly, has enveloped the world。 When anyone enters the mist and breathes in the spores, the spores attack and kill the body, then use the body to attack and kill any living human - these spore riddled bodies are called the ‘Turned’。This story is set 200 years later, when humankind has learned to live with the mist, by living on mountain ranges and building ‘sky isla Secrets in the Mist has such a cool plot。 A man-made mist that was meant to peacefully end a war but instead ended up turning very deadly, has enveloped the world。 When anyone enters the mist and breathes in the spores, the spores attack and kill the body, then use the body to attack and kill any living human - these spore riddled bodies are called the ‘Turned’。This story is set 200 years later, when humankind has learned to live with the mist, by living on mountain ranges and building ‘sky islands’ because the spores cannot survive in high altitudes。 This has caused a huge imbalance of class where the very rich elite can afford to live safely on their sky islands, and the poor are stuck at the borders of the mist fighting for resources and space。 Cass is a street rat, years before, her parents hid her when an unexpected purge happened, and they were forced into the mist by the elite soldiers。 Leaving Cass to fend for herself and survive on instinct。 When Cass is forced to try and steal food from a diver ship, she is caught and, in an unexpected twist, offered a job as a diver。 Divers are brave people that glide down into the mist to retrieve items the rich want, having to fight off the Turned。How cool is this plot? Whenever I read anything about a deadly mist, it reminds me of one of my favourite PlayStation one games, Legend of Legaia。 The pacing was on point in Secrets in the Mist, I couldn't put this book down。 Usually I'm not interested in steampunk, so I haven't really read many stories in this genre, but this one wasn't so focused on the steampunk elements, which I think helped。The main aspects I loved about this book were the fast pacing, the interesting way people glided down into the mist and was able to get back up above the mist (I have no idea if this is possible in real life with ‘thermal wind tunnels’), the zombified Turned, and the terror of it all。 It hits differently when the characters only have a limited supply of ammo to kill the Turned with, and no close combat weapons, so the best bet is to try and outrun them and glide up off of the ground。 I actually felt scared when the Turned showed up。There were a number of things that I wasn't quite keen on。 The main thing was that there were just a few too many holes that didn't make sense。 Divers go down into the mist to retrieve items, yet they had no way of securing these items, so they can safely run and fight the Turned? A number of times the characters were caught out because they were using their hands to hold the items and couldn't defend themselves, it just made no sense。 If you've going to collect a box, why would you not have a strap, sling or bag-type-of-thing to be able to hold it securely to you hands-free? Surely you would plan for that。 But they never did。In this world, besides the class imbalance, there was also gender imbalance, and it just annoyed me。 Even if it made sense for the era。 On the ship that Cass joins as a diver, there wasn't a single female crew member。 In this society, girls were generally seen as weak and worthless, especially the poor。 Even in the higher class, women weren't to be privy to the goings-on of politics。 Sure, it makes sense with the era as per real history, and maybe this is normal for steampunk (?), but it just annoyed me。Sometimes I just think it's a weak plot point for inequality to be a factor in fantasy stories, or maybe I only think this if it isn't done well with a solid history。 Maybe I'm wrong to feel so annoyed about it, but whenever there was mention of Cass not being able to do the same things as men, or viewed differently when she wore a skirt, or Theo's sister not being privy to her grandfathers secret because she wasn't a son - it ground my gears。However, perhaps this is how it is in the steampunk genre, since isn't steampunk a different take on the Victorian era? So perhaps this is another reason I don't like this genre, and this is just something you're to expect when reading it。 You could say then that it's a moot point to bring up, and I should've known better, since I knew the genre was steampunk。 I still can't help feeling that even if that's so, surely you could still incorporate badass women in the story that don't fit the gender norms of the times。 In this particular case, at bare minimum, have female crew on the Daedalus ship that Cass ends up working on。 I will credit the author though for not playing on the gender inequality as a major plot point, and it wasn't often that Cass was held back because of her gender (She was hired without a thought from the Daedalus captain and there was no ill-will towards her from the other male crew members because she was a female)。 I simply had issue with the societal views。On top of this, the characters lacked other diversity too, hair colour was mentioned a few times, and it was either ‘honey-coloured’, ‘bright red’, ‘golden red’, or ‘strawberry red’ (granted half of these descriptions were for Cass), and those characters were from different cities/locations, how could they all have red hair。There were quite a few religious elements, which felt… forced? Not sure what the religious elements had to play in the story to be honest。 It wasn't a big issue when reading, but weirdly it felt out of place when people would start talking about religion, I'm not sure why it pulled me out of the story every time。 Perhaps it was meant to be another divide between rich and poor。 [Edit: After reading more about the author, it turns out religion is one of the genres she incorporates into her stories and worlds, so that helps the religious elements make more sense。 Religion is just a thing that is there and is not meant to move the plot forward。]Lastly, the characters。 I don't have much to say about them really, they weren't exactly characters that I loved and connected with, and I think that's fine in a plot driven story。 Cass had the classic (overdone?) ‘I must do everything on my own and never ask for help’ character arc。 Jeremiah felt like he was meant to be the brotherly figure, but you never learned anything about him, he was just there。 Theo, the clear love interest who was from an opposite world to the main protagonist, he was very interesting to read actually since he was a scientist。 I hope we get more science in the next book。I just think this book isn't really meant to be that deep, is a bit cliché, and you're meant to enjoy it for what it is and ignore the loopholes。 I guess。 I wouldn't say that's a bad thing, it's just not a five-star kind of read for me because of it。 This reads a bit more like middle grade I think, also not a bad thing。Wow, so I had a lot of feelings about Secrets in the Mist。 On one hand, I really loved it, the main elements being the plot, the story, and the pacing。 On the other hand, there were a few things that just really annoyed me and I ended up rolling my eyes a few times。 However, it wasn't a bad book and I want to read the next book to see where it goes, but will kind of hope the annoyances I found in this book won't be as prevalent。 Who knows。 I'm willing to give it a shot。 。。。more

I don't think I've read a steampunk before, so this was a great entrance into the genre。 Everything was built well enough for me to understand it all。 The whole Mist thing was also interesting。 There was the perfect amount of worldbuilding around it for me to understand it, but not so much that it took away from the mystery of it all。 Everything in the Mistworld was intriguing and I found myself worried for the characters as they explored through the infected areas。 The Turned were particularly scary and I'm interested to learn more about them。This was an exciting story from start to finish and I'm excited for book 2。 It can't come soon enough! 。。。more

Goodness, I felt like this story was just starting as I hit the final page, and now I have to wait to find out what happens and get to the bottom of what is really going on! I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of books in the fantasy genre but I have enjoyed books from Morgan L Busse in the past。 So, I was honored to have the opportunity to read her the beginning of her new Skyworld series, Secrets in the Mist。 I thought it was a good read。 It took me a few chapters to get into at first, but once I caught on as to what was going on, I was hooked。 I enjoyed the characters, Cass and Theo, and had to find out what would happen to them。 I am giving Secrets in the M I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of books in the fantasy genre but I have enjoyed books from Morgan L Busse in the past。 So, I was honored to have the opportunity to read her the beginning of her new Skyworld series, Secrets in the Mist。 I thought it was a good read。 It took me a few chapters to get into at first, but once I caught on as to what was going on, I was hooked。 I enjoyed the characters, Cass and Theo, and had to find out what would happen to them。 I am giving Secrets in the Mist four stars。 I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean young adult fantasy。 I look forward to reading the next installment from the Skyworld series。 I received a copy of Secrets in the Mist from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review。 This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion。 。。。more

Wow! I think this is set to be my favorite series from Morgan L。 Busse, but that being said, I recommend everything she's written that I've read。 There's something familiar about the premise of this book, but it's totally different than anything I've read。 I immediately loved the main character Cass and wanted to see her safe, cared for, and loved。 She's strong but vulnerable, which is a hard balance to gain in most characters but something that often feels lacking in many YA novels。 She lost he Wow! This book was such an exciting read! Very fast paced, I was never bored with the content, and always ready to turn the page to find out what would happen next。 The way the Mist is described makes it feel so real, I can picture it clearly! This book was awesome! Steampunk is one of my favorite genres, so when I found out that Morgan L。 Busse was releasing a new steampunk duology, I was ecstatic。 Her Soul Chronicles series is a favorite of mine。 And Secrets in the Mist did not disappoint。 It blew my already high expectations out of the water。 I was fully invested and completely immersed in the story from the very first sentence till the very last word。The world-building was fantastic。 Everything really came to life。 The description This book was awesome! Oh my goodness, I need the next book ASAP! This will be a definite reread for me。 I loved it so much and highly recommend it!I received an early copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it。 All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion。 。。。more

The first in a YA steampunk series Skyworld, in the Secrets in the Mist you enter an intriguing world of adventure and mystery。 Humans are now living in the skies to escape the deadly mists that now cover the earth。 Cass is just trying to survive until she finds a job as a diver on the airship Daedalus。 Now, she explores the abandoned world below looking for treasure or lost heirlooms。 Then they are hired to find the impossible, a way to destroy the Mist。 Theodore Winchester is part of the Five The first in a YA steampunk series Skyworld, in the Secrets in the Mist you enter an intriguing world of adventure and mystery。 Humans are now living in the skies to escape the deadly mists that now cover the earth。 Cass is just trying to survive until she finds a job as a diver on the airship Daedalus。 Now, she explores the abandoned world below looking for treasure or lost heirlooms。 Then they are hired to find the impossible, a way to destroy the Mist。 Theodore Winchester is part of the Five ruling families of the skies。 As he follows the steps of his father, trying to find the source of the Mist and combat the purges used to control overpopulation, he only discovers horrifying secrets。 The Mist is rising, will they be able to find answers before the rest of the people left turn into the undead?tThis was such a cool book! I have not read too many steampunk novels and so was really excited to try this。 Ms。 Busse creates an amazing world with such a cool idea。 The Mist is so interesting, especially as you learn more about it throughout the book。 The airships and divers were also really interesting。 I don’t think that I could ever do it, but I loved seeing Cass learn and enjoy it。 I thought that Cass was so admirable。 She was a survivor and had learned how to take care of herself。 Cass had the experience of living in the dangers of the world in the sky。 She saw the dangers the Mist brought。 Theo was from practically another world than Cass。 He was searching for answers through research and history。 I thought that his determination to find answers was also very admirable。 Even though he was discouraged from searching, he wanted to find a solution for the Mist。 Theo was seeking to find a way to save people from the dangers of the Mist。 I really liked both of these characters。 They were relatable and honorable。 The plot was really interesting, though the first half seemed a little more like set-up for the story。 I understand that the stage needs to be set and the world needs to be established, but I really got into the story in the second half。 This book is definitely part of a series, as the story does not end on the last page! I am eagerly anticipating the next installment! I would recommend this book to those who like fantasy/adventure books。 If you are interested in steampunk, this is for you! It is a clean YA novel, with minimal violence。 I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author。 All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review。 。。。more

She's got me hook, line, and sinker! She's created such an incredible and believable world that it came to life as soon as I started reading the story! Don't you love how you can feel such emotion for a character even when you've only just met them? That's how I felt for Cass。 She's left alone in her world to fend for herself and thankfully finds herself on an airship that honestly, I would've loved to get a ride on and I don't even like flying! We also meet Theo, from one of the rich families, who lives on the sky islands。 And I have to admit, I'd love to try out one of his zippers。 Lots of flying machines! While he may be from one of the Five Families, he has more of a care for those trying to survive below and those who suffer the purges。I love how Cass ends up on the Deadalus。 The captain becomes one of my favorite characters。 He gives her a sense of family, belonging, and purpose。 He also gives her more insight into Elaeros - this world's name for God。 It's incredible how the author is able to weave the important faith element into her story! She seems to have a natural ability to be a diver and creates quite the reputation for herself。Now, I totally get zombie vibes from this story and yes, it's super creepy when they show up on the scene。 Those who end up in the mist, the Turned, are obviously my least favorite part of the story。 I mean, who wants the divers being attacked? Imagine diving into unknown (and sometimes known) territory not knowing if you'll have a quiet day to retrieve artifacts or if you'll be shooting up Turned left and right! The writing was so good in this story that my only problem is, the ending is such a HUGE cliffhanger, how am I supposed to wait patiently for the next book?!*I received this book for review。 This is my personal opinion。 。。。more
